I haven’t begin to reach the level of skitz that Jeff Harrell is apparently undergoing. I’ve been reading his blog The Shape of Days and I must say that I am enjoying it, however he is currently in a crisis phase. Not your typical I-left-the-oven-on crisis, but something that sounds like it may send him into a corner balled-up and crying.
He’s deliberating on whether to stay in Dallas, Texas or venture off to Washington D.C. with promise of a job there. I’ve been to Washington D.C. several times and I can’t honestly say if I’d like to live there but I love to visit. I think the cost of living alone would scare me out of it, but from what I’ve read of Jeff’s blog, he doesn’t seem the type to fear that. First of all, he writes a blog (on a regular basis) and sometimes it’s quite personal. He does many other things as well but I’m not sure what he does for a living, but it doesn’t matter and it’s none of my business. Writing in my blog is something I’ve only done on a casual basis because my focus always seems to be elsewhere. I’d also like to start a podcast and I have the equipment to do it, but not the motivation to find a theme.
I know it’s difficult to start over in a new place without many (any?) friends. Hell, I don’t have many friends now and I’ve lived in Arlington 25 years. All my friends from high school…I have no idea where they are or how they’re doing. I’ve got a couple of buddies from my last job but they are busy people and an email or two is about all they have time for…but that’s OK. People are busy. I’m busy. You’re busy. Shoot me an email and let me know how you’re doing. Blah. Blah. Blahhhhhhhhhhhhh. Jeff, it will take some time, but you will find friends in D.C. just like you would find people anywhere else. Don’t let that be an overwhelming factor. As for the job, people always say, “Have fun at your job.” Well, having fun at your job isn’t a job, it’s a hobby that you do from 8 to 5 Monday through Friday, then you have to find a new hobby for the weekends. Good luck in your decision and I hope whatever you decide, you stick to it and DON’T LOOK BACK.
